Beauty Is In the Eye of the Beholder

After going around Alcatraz, the former infamous prison island off the coast of San Francisco, and seeing nothing but derelict structures and depressing concrete surroundings, I turned a corner and chanced upon this bunch of beautiful flowers that seemed so out of place. But the stark contrast between beauty and ugliness, artificial and natural, colorful and drab, reminded me of the lines in Desiderata: “…. with all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world”. Indeed!
