Beginning from St. Moritz, Switzerland, the famed Bernina Express traverses the spectacular Swiss Alps for 144 kms. south to Tirano in Italy. It climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between northern and southern Europe passes between regions with different languages and cultures. The train negotiates 55 tunnels and 196 bridges during its 4-hour journey. It was in the midst of winter when we took the journey so most of the sights were blanketed in white snow but they were awesome nevertheless. This is one train pulling out of a station as ours stopped on a siding to let it pass while a heavy flurry of snow blots out the landscape.
